Happy Thursday Families!
This week we enjoyed learning about the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag Indians. We are continuing to work on reading super powers! So far we have the following powers: Pointer Power (pointing to the words), Pattern Power (remembering the patterns in books), Eagle Eye (looking at the picture for clues), and Lips the Fish (getting out mouth ready with the first sound in a word), Elephant Ears (listening and asking, does that sound right?)and new this week: Skippy Scott (skipping a tricky word and then coming back), and Chunky Monkey (looking for a chunk within a word that we know). Lunch and Learn was great fun! I know all of your students were incredibly proud of their accomplishments. Thank you to all who came to help them celebrate. Disguise a Gingerbread went home today. During the month of December we will be doing a Gingerbread book study and reading as many versions of the folktale as we can. To go along with this, please help your student to disguise their gingerbread! You can decorate right on the paper provided, or use it as a template to make your gingerbread from something else. Pinerest is a great place for ideas. Kids have dressed them up as things such as: Batman, Cat and the Hat, princess, etc. Please send these back in by Dec 4. We will be displaying them in the hall. Calling all Candy Canes. We will be doing a candy cane science unit in the month of December. Please send in candy canes for us to use for our experiments. Different sizes, flavor, and colors. As we continue to grow our classroom use of iPads, please send in a pair of labeled headphones for your student. Each child having their own prevents the spread of lice (and there have been several cases of lice at Atkinson this week). Fun Run took place on Monday and we had a great time! Thank you to all who pledged support. Scholastic: Don’t forget to place your scholastic order to help support our classroom library! My class code is RD4R8 You will enter our class code when you order. I will place our class order at the end of each month. The books are delivered to the school and your purchase helps earn books and resources for our class. Calling all Box Tops! Don’t forget to send them in. Happy Thursday Families!
This week we enjoyed learning about Veterans, and attended the school Veteran’s Day program. We are continuing to work on reading super powers! So far we have the following powers: Pointer Power (pointing to the words), Pattern Power (remembering the patterns in books), Eagle Eye (looking at the picture for clues), and Lips the Fish (getting out mouth ready with the first sound in a word), and new this week, Elephant Ears (listening and asking, does that sound right?).. Conferences: It is required that first quarter you have a parent teacher conference. Please go to our sign-up genius and sign up for a conference. Be sure to turn in the homework for parents sheet, it will help shape your conference. Our Earn a Feather challenge continues. Please work with your child on the skills and when they have achieved them at home sign the form. When they receive the signature from me, they have “earned a feather.” They will receive their feathers during our Lunch and Learn on Thursday November 16. To clarify, for uppercase and lowercase they only need to identify them, they do not have to be written out. As we continue to grow our classroom use of iPads, please send in a pair of labeled headphones for your student. Each child having their own prevents the spread of lice (and there have been several cases of lice at Atkinson this week). Fun Run will be on Monday! This week we enjoyed learning about pumpkins. We particularly enjoyed our science lab measuring pumpkins and discovering that they float. Our fall harvest party was such fun! Thank you to all who helped make it possible. We are also working on reading super powers! So far we have the following powers: Pointer Power (pointing to the words), Pattern Power (remembering the patterns in books), Eagle Eye (looking at the picture for clues), and Lips the Fish (getting out mouth ready with the first sound in a word). This week we finished our handwriting focus on lowercase letters. We learned letters r, p, n, m, h,b, q, x, and z. Your student will be bringing home their orange handwriting book next week in their white take home folder. Please save this as a resource. It is a great guide for how we are expecting students to form letters. It was all completed in pencil and could easily be erased for additional practice at home. Letterland Day was a total success! The children really enjoyed getting to teach not only our class their character, but also those who attended our parade.Thank you to those who came to cheer us on! . Report Cards went home today. Please review, sign, and return them. I will go over the information at parent teacher conferences. Conferences: It is required that first quarter you have a parent teacher conference. Please fill this form out and return it. We have started our Earn a Feather challenge. This month as we learn about Native Americans and how they earned feathers to make their headdresses, we will be doing the same! Please work with your child on the skills and when they have achieved them at home sign the form. When they receive the signature from me, they have “earned a feather.” They will receive their feathers during our Lunch and Learn on Thursday November 16. If you can attend please fill out the form that was sent home this week. To go along with our Lunch and Learn and Native American unit, we will be using brown paper bags to make vests. Please send in a brown paper grocery bag for your student. Extras are welcome! Please be sure it is the full size, so that it can be made into a vest. Raz Kids login information has been sent home in your student’s cougar folder. Please use this information to access Raz Kids at home. This is a wonderful resource to access books on your child’s level at home. We will also begin using this resource in class next week, as well as some other resources on the iPad. Please send in a pair of labeled headphones for your student. Each child having their own prevents the spread of lice.
